Darlene stood next to William as they both watched Kaia say a tearful goodbye to her family. “Poor girl. She seems so confident, so strong. I didn’t expect her to fall apart like that.” She chuckled. “Roni couldn’t wait to get out of the house. The moment he turned eighteen, he moved out even though he was just exchanging one prison for another.”

It broke William’s heart to see Kaia cry her eyes out as she hugged her baby brothers and kissed their cheeks.

“She’s very attached to her younger siblings. I don’t think it would have been as difficult for her if it was just the adults and Cheryl. She must have strong maternal instincts.”

“That reminds me.” Darlene looked up at him. “Did you ask her about the old guy inside her head?”

“He was middle-aged, not old, and no, I didn’t.” Grimacing, he whispered, “I had a hard enough time just controlling my libido.”

“I don’t know why you are fighting it so hard. So she’s young, but she’s very mature, smart, and she’s into you. So, what’s the problem?”

“She’s practically a kid. I feel like a pedophile for even thinking about her as a woman.”

Darlene shook her head. “She is a woman, William, legally and otherwise, and you two are a match made in heaven. Where are you going to find another lady who is smart enough to actually challenge you? Besides, wasn’t Wonder only nineteen when she and Anandur first met?”

“That was different. Wonder is ancient. She’s older than Annani by a year or two.”

Huffing out a breath, Darlene put a hand on his bicep. “Wonder had spent all those thousands of years in stasis, and she’d only accumulated nineteen years of experiences. I bet that Kaia is more mature than Wonder was when she fell in love with Anandur. In fact, Kaia’s soul is so old that she might as well be my age.”

He cast her a small smile. “How did it go with the uncle? Are you two going to see each other again?”

“I hope so. We’ve exchanged phone numbers, and he said that he would try to return as early as tomorrow, but I’m not holding my breath. Eric is a player, and frankly, I don’t know what he sees in me when he can get women half my age.”

“Maybe he likes more mature ladies? I for one prefer older women who know what they want, and who don’t play games.”

“You just described Kaia. She knows what she wants, and she’s not bashful about it.”

Perhaps that explained why he was so attracted to her. It wasn’t just about her incredible brain and her sexy, young body. It was also about her assertive attitude and her directness.

“She kissed me,” he admitted. “It was to thank me for agreeing to help find her friend, but she kissed me on the lips, so it couldn’t have been just about gratitude.”

“Good for her!” Darlene said a little too loudly. “Sorry,” she whispered. “I got excited. Was it a real kiss, or just a peck?”

William felt his face getting warm.
